A Desire

Dr. G. Manjulatha Devi, Asst. Prof. of English, Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science, Warangal

My own sobs woke me up at midnight
Open eyes could see but darkness
I smiled. A dead smile.
Why I weep even awake. And like me
Plenty in the world.
Surviving without SELF
My conscience. My God.
This is perfect atheism and I am supreme.
He discarded me as I am rising
Mounting the ladder of SEVEN DREADFUL EVILS
So tempting. A cast-iron promise for power
At the top I found Fastus smiling ruefully
As Mephistopheles’ captive
This Saturn’s faithful representative is committed to work
The one waiting to reward for what I have done
With arms stretched and mouth open. I am scared
God’s eternal power is omnipresent
I bow at His Lotus Feet
To battle with Mephistopheles and return to me
As my SELF and CONSCIENCE.
