The Human Spectator

Though there be darkness at my feet
A twilight calm surrounds
My middle regions;
Far above in the sky
Light plays with light.
How it splits itself and
Penetrates into its twin image!
Then the two halves throb
In the felicity of union.
The welkin canvas widens itself
To support the illimitable sport
Of light and its myriad moods.
The darkness at my feet
Thickens into an impossible crust
And my leaden eyelids shut out
The marvel of another realm.
